Relatively new to cultivation, this South American native makes an excellent accent or shade tree for small garden spaces. The tree’s open canopy of delicate, finely textured leaves allows just enough sunlight to create dappled shade during hot summer months. When selectively pruned from a single leader, the tree can be used adjacent to outdoor terraces and front entrance verandas. The tree is evergreen in South Florida and the leaf drop is fairly inconspicuous. Caesalpinia’s peeling bark is also a distinguishable characteristic, created by an attractive blend of green, gray and cinnamon-colored hues. In Zone 10 landscapes, the Bridalveil tree flowers midsummer through fall with small yellow flowers.

Left unmown by a homeowner who is keen on barefoot walks, these delicate tufts of soft-bladed Cashmere are over two feet in height in some areas, providing the sensation of walking on clouds as you sink and bounce along the soft billowy mounds. The look of this untamed lawn is particularly attractive in casual landscapes, against native plinths of limestone walls or in between large stepping stone slabs.
